The art historians interested in this artist connected him to the Impressionism art movement [citation needed] although he could be considered, in some ways, an innovator in his field. He received the basics of drawing from his father Saverio and he studied in Palmi at the teacher training school. In the 1950s, Lorenzo began to define the themes of his work. Between 1957 and 1960 he taught drawing at the archiepiscopal seminary of Tropea. In the 1960s he started to participate and win awards [citation needed] in national and international group exhibitions (such as Paris, Deauville and Nice in France, Knokke in Belgium and New York in the United States). According to the art historian Maurizio Calvesi, he did not make an instrumental use of the peasant culture, because his feeling to approach those people corresponded to a "surge of identification".
