Art deco vase made of bluish “Scailmont” glass. Signed CH.CATTEAU Height 22 cm. It is in perfect condition: “see photos”. The Scailmont glassworks created in 1901 in Manage in the Belgian province of Hainaut, opened a decorative glass department in 1924 under the direction of Henry Heemskerk, a decorator painter in the workshop led by Charles Catteau. From 1925, numerous moulded pressed vases in the Art Deco style were made under the direction of Charles Catteau after the models designed by Henri Heemskerk. From 1927, Charles Catteau also started releasing his own models Charles Crépin Nicolas Catteau was a Franco-Belgian ceramist, born on 26th January 1880 in Douai and died on 20th October 1966 in Nice. Charles Catteau was born to a Belgian father and a French mother. After studying ceramic engineering at the manufacture nationale de Sèvres - which later became the École nationale supérieure de céramique industrielle - where he worked for two years, he left for Germany in 1904 to the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory near Munich. He was poached by Boch who was seeking to renew the production of his factory in La Louvière, Boch-Kéramis. He took charge of the decoration department in 1907 and he remained head until 1946. He worked with all materials, trying all genres (Japanese, African, figurative, cubist...) and he found great success, with international recognition during the Exhibition of Decorative Arts in 1925 and a Grand Prix. He left several vases behind including famous stoneware, with stylised motifs drawn from flora and fauna. After the Second World War, Charles Catteau retired to Nice on the French Riviera.
