Eileen Gray by Ecart -'Transat' Deckchairs

Eileen Gray, world famous for the design of the Transat Deckchairs made for the beautiful Villa E 1027 at Roquebrune, in Italy and among other things for her minimalistic coffee table. We offer 2 Very Rare original Eileen Gray Transat chairs designed in 1927 in bright black lacquered wood. Seat and back upholstered in black smooth leather, the wood is combined with stunning chromed steel. These chairs are bought in the late 60ties and have already reached an age of almost 60 years, but due to the outstanding craftsmanship still in excellent condition. Off course there is here and there some wear consistent with there age, but we all photographed this as good as possible. Please take a close look at the pictures before bidding. We decided not for restoration of the small scuff marks on the wood to keep the chair in complete original condition. on the leather there is a small superficial scuff mark that can be easily made black again with shoe polish. in 1 chair there are 2 thin hair cracks in metal parts on the bottom of the chair, these are just hair cracks and do not affect the strength of the chair in any way. These chairs sit like a dream, on the moment you sit yourself down your body relaxes and you Imagine yourself sitting on a deck of an old steamboat drifting away from the burdens of the day. The fact that there are 2 chairs to share this feeling makes it even more unique. The Eileen Gray Transat Chair was used as a deck chair at the famous Villa E 1027 at Roquebrune Menton. It was originally registered under the name "Transat" by Eileen Gray and Jean Badovici in 1927. The name Transat was used as an abbreviation for Transatlantic referring to steamship travel and the deck chairs commonly used on such ships. The Transat Chair has become one of Eileen Gray's most enduring and signature pieces. Eileen Gray was born in Enniscorthy in Ireland in 1878. She died in Paris in 1976. She was from an emigrant family and attended the Slade School in London, before finally moving to France in 1907. Following an initial experimental period with lacquers, she became increasingly involved in furniture design, and later in architectural projects. Her designs are widely recognized as being highly original and refined. These characteristics can clearly bee seen in the design of the Transat Chair. These chairs are the original ones made by Ecart based in France ( the only company with the license to produce them) this pair of unique chairs are bought in the late sixties. Dimensions: Height 30 1/4" Depth 43" Width 22" Seat Height (at front) 16" Seat Height at lowest point 10 3/4" Width 55 cm, Depth 105 cm, Height 80 cm, Seat Height 40 cm.
