Jean Adolphe Godefroid d'Hoffschmidt
Adolphe d'Hoffschmidt (Resteigne, 13 March 1747 - Lesve, 28 March 1830) became famous in 1816 under the name d'Hoffschmidt de Resteigne for painting hereditary nobles and was awarded Knighthood of the province of Namur. He was the mayor of Resteigne until his death.
In 1772, he married Marie Joséphine Raimond d'Andoy (Namur, 1750 - Lesve, 1822) and they had two children:
• Louise d'Hoffschmidt (1775-1842), who married baron Leopold de Goër de Herve et de Forêt (1767-1847). He was industrial (maître de forges), maire of Resteigne and mayor of Lesve. The couple took possession of the castle of Lesve.
• Edmond d'Hoffschmidt (Namur, 1777 - Resteigne, 1861).
Jean Thomas Antoine Edmond d'Hoffschmidt (Namur, 24 October 1777-Resteigne, 12 March 1861), also known as the hermit of Resteigne, was lieutenant in a regiment of Belgian hunters on horseback from 1806 to 1809, led by Prince Prosper of Arenberg. He then quitted due to health issues. A romantic love in Pomerania with Christiane von Keffenbrinck, was thwarted by his father and this was probably the basis of the misanthropy that led him to live as a hermit.
In 1811, he decided to take refuge in the forests of Niau in Auffe (now Rochefort) and built a comfortable home. He also included an oven in order to bake his own bread and a greenhouse to grow flowers and plants. He lived in solitude from his 37th to his 52nd year of life. He was not completely alone, for he had as a governess and was later joined by Victoire Suray (Belvaux, 11 July 1801 - 23 April 1867). She gave him a daughter, Leocadie (9 April 1825 – 14 October 1912), whom he provided with an education from the best schools and who later lived with him until his death.
In 1830, his father died and Edmond resided in the castle of Resteigne for a part of the year. He was very active. On the one hand he had to expand his patrimony. In addition to the castles of Resteigne and Hodister, he also owned numerous homesteads and forests. He also purchased the castle of Chanly. On the other hand, he took an interest in the villagers. He was a member of the municipality council and from 1847 on, he was, in succession to his brother-in-law, mayor of Resteigne and remained so until his death. He became a great philanthropist. His many writings and letters (done by hand) remained preserved and were not seriously studied and published until the 21st century.
The year after his death, Léocadie married with the farmer Edmond Mouzelard (1837-1902). They had four children, lived in Chanly and she was 83 when she died.
