The first picture was inspired by the painting “l’orage” painted in 1880 by Pierre-Auguste Cot (1837-1883). The woven picture was created in 1899 by Neyret Frères.
The second picture was created in the same format by Neyret in 1908 to be paired with “l’orage”. He was inspired by another painting also by Pierre-Auguste Cot : "le Printemps" from 1870.
Around 1900, the two pictures responded to the popularity of certain idyllic scenes taken from the novels of Bernardin de Saint-Pierre (Paul et Virginie) and Grec Longus (Daphnis et Chloé) and were considered a “must” for the production of Neyrat Frères at the time.
Biography:
Pierre Auguste Cot was a French painter born in Bédarieux on 17 February 1837 and died in Paris on 2 July 1883. He studied at the École des beaux-arts in Toulouse, then in Paris where he was a student of Léon Cogniet, Alexandre Cabanel and William Bouguereau.
He exhibited his first paintings in 1863 at the Salon de Paris. He became popular at the end of the 1870s and was part of the jury of the Salon de Paris and the Prix de Rome. He enjoyed the protection of sculptor Francisque Duret and married his daughter. He worked with William Bouguereau. He won numerous awards and medals and in 1874 was named a Knight of the Légion d'Honneur.
Pierre Auguste Cot had Ellen Day Hale (1855-1940) and Anna Klumpke, amongst others, as students.
